Preparing for TAKE ONE: Meet Jonas SUN7

Tomorrow is the opening of the group exhibition TAKE ONE. If you aren't familiar with them already we have two more artists to introduce you to that will be a part of the exhibition. Jonas SUN7, one of France’'s most promising young contemporary artists, translates calligraphic techniques of street art into fine art. Pushing the margins of contemporary arts, SUN7 creates a unique visual language.

An exploration of graffiti culture as a teenager blossomed into installation and performance art that soon opened the eyes of art enthusiasts around the world. Jonas SUN7 suffered a rude awakening following his father’s stroke. This experience marked a distinct turning point in his career, and he began to eternalize memories through his letterforms, questioning who we are in connection to our memory. Capturing the impact of spontaneity and self expression as well as the action of live art on canvas, allowed him worldwide gallery exposure.

Art critic Gilles De Bure stated, “[Bournat’s] register became permeated by multiple new influences: action painting, Arabic calligraphy, Latino tattoos, but words and calligraphy remained dominant – a mesh of words, a lace of letters, most often indecipherable but which when combined made portraits and self-portraits.” De Bure added, “Obvious portraits and coded texts created a subtle play of appearance/disappearance, in which everything related to calligraphy, glyphs and ideograms became as unreal as can be nurturing a deep sense of interest and mystery.”

SUN7's work has appeared in numerous exhibitions and art fairs since 1997. His work has been exhibited in high-profile openings at Grand Palais, Fondation Cartier, Espace Louis Vuitton and Palais Tokyo in Paris, as well as in a collective exhibition curated by Magda Danysz.
